The United Kingdom has urged the federal government to end insecurity to ensure a smooth democratic process in next year’s general elections.
The country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, stated this while briefing newsmen after a meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, and other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Wednesday in Abuja.
She also said the British government would work with whoever emerges as President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in the election.
Laing said the safety of voters should be guaranteed so that they would come out in their numbers and exercise their franchise.

She said, “We talked about the importance of people actually on the day turning out to vote. They need to turn out to vote on the day and that means no intimidation, a secure environment and people feeling that they can vote for the candidate they want.
“We as the UK have no vote in this country. Our vote goes to a credible and free election. The UK and Nigeria have a very strong and deep partnership and we want Nigeria to succeed and democracy as part of it.”
