N/East one of world’s largest humanitarian crises areas – UN

North East, Nigeria is one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises zone, with at least 8.3million people in need of assistance in 2023, according to the United Nations (UN).

Violent conflict, climate crisis, diseases and other risks, according to the just launched Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO), are putting their lives at risk.

The GHO provides an annual assessment of global humanitarian needs and how best to respond to them.

According to the GHO, in 2023, millions of vulnerable people in Nigeria and beyond will continue to face a daily struggle to survive.

It added that the scale of suffering borne every day by women, men and children across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states remained undiminished; urgent action is needed now more than ever.

It said addressing the needs of 5.4million people would require close to US$ 1.2billion.

“The bravery, dedication, resilience and commitment of frontline staff mostly working for non-governmental organisation partners who deliver the bulk of humanitarian assistance humble me. Without them, we would not be able to support the government in addressing humanitarian needs in Nigeria,” said the humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Matthias Schmale.
