The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamali, has called for the phasing out of courses that do not immediately provide jobs for graduates from the Nigerian university system.
He stressed that only skills, not degrees, would provide gainful employment for the increasing number of youths in the country and bring about the needed development in the country.
Speaking at an event in Kaduna, the emir also said young girls, especially of northern Nigeria extraction, must combine useful western education with Islamic education to succeed.
“It is not about getting a degree; it is a useless sheet of paper, but what have you done with the education you have acquired; how have you applied what you have studied in school and what can you do with your hands? That is what matters today, not to be going through a process that will not help you, even in your own home.

“Again, there are certain courses now in the Nigerian university system that should be phased out. I am an advocate of that. Those courses that will not fetch you anything after you graduate, those that will only add to the number in the labour market, should be phased out.
“There is no point going to the university to study something that will not be useful to the society, so, we are advocating that those courses should be looked at and be replaced with those that can actually take you to the Promised Land,” he said.
He stressed the need for the youth to actively engage themselves in entrepreneurship, saying, “Entrepreneurship is the key and the way forward. We should try and be employers of labour, not to go and collect salaries that cannot even buy you recharge cards for two weeks.”
