World AIDS Day: Bauchi records over 2,000 HIV cases in 2022

Bauchi State Ministry of Health has disclosed that the state has recorded over 2,000 new cases of HIV/AIDS in 2022 in the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Sabiu Abdu Gwalabe, who made this known on Thursday during a press conference to mark the World AIDS Day in the state explained that 98 per cent of the over 2,000 new cases were linked to treatment within this year alone.

He added, “This is the highest number of new cases detected in any year in the state, which was due to the dedication and new approaches deployed by our staff and partners.

“The state currently has an estimated number of about 30,000 people living with HIV.

“Out of the 30,000, 29,160 of them have already been identified representing 97 per cent. Likewise, 27,639 of those who knew their HIV positive status are currently on treatment representing 95 percent coverage.”

He, however, revealed that there was gradual but consistent reduction in the prevalence of HIV in the state to only 0.4 percent in 2019 which was much lower than the national prevalence of 1.5 percent approximately totaling about 3 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
