No assassination attempt on Peter Obi in Ibadan – Police

 The Oyo State police command, on Saturday debunked the news of an assassination attempt on the presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi during his presidential rally in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. 

Some online mediums (not Daily Trust online) had on Thursday reported that there was an assassination attempt on Peter Obi at the rally at the Lekan Salami, Adamasingba Stadium.

But reacting to the news, the state police command, through the state public relations officer, Adewale Osifeso, said it was true that one Lateef Wasiu was arrested by police officers stationed at the venue for being in possession of a concealed weapon, a double-faced jack-knife placed on the inside of his suit in violation of the 2022 Electoral Act and other guiding regulations.

Reiterating that there was no assassination attempt on the life of Mr Obi contrary to widespread, he warned the people against fake news that could threaten the peace of the state.

While the state police command advised the leadership of political groups in the state to prevail on their supporters against approaching campaign grounds with dangerous objects in a bid to enforce dominance, he also warned that; “the command would deal decisively with defaulters through appropriate sanctions in strict accordance with the laws of the land.”

The police boss said the suspect had been charged to court to explain the reason behind his action, saying, “Further updates would be provided accordingly, please.”
