ASUU/FG crisis threat to APC chances in 2023 — Prof. Yerima

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Haruna Yerima, Sunday said the crisis between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government is a threat to the party’s chances of winning the 2023 general elections.

Yerima, a former lawmaker from Borno, specifically said ‘no work, no pay’ policy adopted by the president against the university lecturers less than 100 days to the general elections is a time-bomb that may explode and negatively affect the APC’s chances next year.

Yerima who spoke with newsmen in Abuja called on President Buhari to prevail on his ministers in order to resolve the lingering issues which had weakened academics in the Nigerian universities, adding that he must end the crisis which is overshadowing some of the sterling achievements of the APC administration in the past seven years.

He maintained that if the ruling party must retain power in 2023, it must “urgently intervene and address the thorny issues between the administration and the academic union.”

He said, “The president shouldn’t allow that to happen. The crisis must be resolved so that the party wins squarely in the forthcoming elections. So far, the opposition parties have been cashing on the lingering ASUU crisis to score cheap political goals.

“The president must act fast and shouldn’t be seen to be giving the opposition the desired energy to use the ASUU crisis as a campaign point against the APC.”
