Jigawa APC Reps: Court replaces Kanta with Dogonyaro over false information

A federal high court in Abuja has ordered the disqualification of Aminu Kanta as the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate in Jigawa State over false information.

Justice Emeka Nwite also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to substitute the name of Aminu Kanta, also known as Ahmed Mohammed, with the name of Isa Dogonyaro as the APC candidate for Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State.

The court agreed with the submission of Dongonyaro’s counsel, Sunusi Musa, that by the combined provisions of Section 66(1) (i) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 29(5) and (6) of the Electoral Act 2022, Kanta has given false information over the primary school he purportedly attended, in the Affidavit in Support of Personal Particulars submitted to INEC for his APC nomination.

Dongonyaro had contended in the originating summon with suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1052/2022. Aminu Kanta served as commissioner and special adviser in the state from 2015-2022 under the name Ahmed Mohammed.

He said in the affidavit in support of the originating summon that the same person contested the party primary under a different name, Aminu Kanta, on May 28, 2022, after resigning as a special adviser in Jigawa State on May 16 with the name of Ahmed Mohammed.

Dogonyaro, therefore, asked the court to hold that the academic records Kanta submitted to INEC contained some inconsistencies.
