Humanitarian ministry laments kidnapping of its workers

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has decried the abduction of humanitarian workers under its ministry.

The Head, Special Duties Department, Mrs Nadia-Soso Mohammed, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during a sensitisation programme for staff of the ministry on risk of kidnapping, hostage taking and other security drills.

She said various people have been displaced due to the incessant security challenges in the country, hence it was the mandate of the ministry to provide succour to the affected people.

Mohammed, who was represented by Mrs Dinatu Wuya, explained that whenever the humanitarian staff and workers were on the field providing humanitarian services to victims of various disaster issues, attention is created, which exposes them and their families to the threat of kidnap and hostage taking.

According to Mohammed, it was necessary to sensitize staff of the ministry whose duty it is to cater to vulnerable people on ways to prevent and protect themselves from being kidnapped while on the field.

In his keynote address on kidnap prevention tips, Wing Commander (rtd) Musa Salmanu noted that people should be careful of their new and existing environment to avoid attracting kidnappers.

He advised that one should avoid routines, visibility by people, giving out personal information to people so as to not to attract attention and become a likely victim of kidnapping.
