Man bags 7 years’ jail for stealing cables

A magistrates’ court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced 19-year-old man, Olamide Olasode, to seven years in prison without an option of fine for stealing cables worth N397,000 from an uncompleted building.

The Magistrate, I.O Abudu, sentenced Olasode following his plea of guilty on a two-count charge of felony and theft.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the accused committed the offences on October 31, at about 10pm at Ibukunoluwade community in the Ile-Ise Awo area of Abeokuta.

Olu-Balogun said the convict entered the uncompleted building of one Mr Yemi Fadipe and stole eight rolls of 1.5mm cables valued at N84,000, six rolls of 2.5mm cables valued at N105,000, four rolls of 4mm cables valued at N118,000 and two rolls of 6mm cables worth N90,000 – all valued at N397,000.

Meanwhile, a Karu area court sitting in Abuja on Monday sentenced a 24-year-old driver, Umar Ibrahim, to six months in prison for defrauding his employer of N290,000.

The Judge, Ishaq Hassan, however, gave the convict an option of N15,000 fine and ordered the him to pay a compensation of N290,000 to the complainant.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Olarewaju Osho, told the court that the complainant, John Anyanwu of Kurudu, reported that sometime in September he entrusted his van to Ibrahim with the agreement that he would be remitting N50,000 weekly to him.

He said, “However, with an intent to cheat the complainant, the defendant remitted N60,000 only instead of N350,000 after working for seven weeks, and refused to pay up the balance of N290,000.”
