Police officer gets promotion, N1m for rejecting $200,000 bribe

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved a special promotion for Daniel Itse Amah, the police officer, who rejected a $200,000 bribe from armed robbers.

Daily Trust reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 4 conferred an integrity award on Amah during the 4th edition of the annual national anti-corruption summit organized by the ICPC.

Different bodies had also recognized the sincerity of the officer and his dedication to the job with various awards.

Amah, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Nasarawa Division in Kano State, was on the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) before he was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) two months ago.

But the Acting Chairman of the PSC, Justice Clara Ogunbiyi (Rtrd), at an event organised in Amah’s honour in Abuja on Thursday, said the police officer deserved more than that to encourage other police officers in the country.

The PSC boss announced that the police officer be promoted from the CSP rank to the Assistant Commissioner of Police and be given the sum of N1million.

“The law that established this commission permits us to recognize outstanding police officers by promoting them. I hereby announced the promotion of CSP Daniel Amah to the rank of ACP,” Ogunbiyi, a retired justice of the Supreme Court said.

She said the commission wanted a situation where Nigeria will be corrupt-free in line with the preaching of the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In an interview with journalists, Amah explained that friends and family members initially scolded him for rejecting the huge sum of money and called him different names.

He, however, said those who initially scolded him later congratulated him when the government noticed and recognized his act.
