No fewer than six women were crushed to death when a tipper conveying sharp sand reportedly suffered brake failure along the Gubio Road on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
It was learnt that the incident occurred around 10am yesterday at Kaswan Fara, Shagari Low-cost Estate area.
An eyewitness, Kola Fatai told our correspondent that the sand-laden truck rammed into a pickup van conveying women who were going to the farm, killing at least six women with others injured.
A resident of the area, Iman Buba, told our correspondent that following the incident, angry youths set two trucks ablaze while protesting the incident.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP SK Shatambaya, said the command was yet to be briefed on the incident, promising to get back as soon as detailed information is available.
