The Comptroller General, Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Isah Jere Idris, has described the smuggling of migrants into the country as a threat to Nigeria’s economy.
He spoke yesterday during a nationwide sensitisation on the Smuggling of Migrants (SOM) for NIS officers, border management agencies and the general public in collaboration with development partners in Benin.

According to him, it was worrisome that recent research showed that 75 per cent of Nigerian migrants planned to use smugglers to facilitate their land travelling but later became vulnerable to them.
Represented by Angela Esekhaigbe, Assistant Comptroller General in charge of Migration Directorate, NIS, Abuja, he said SOM constituted a threat to the nation’s economy and security, socio-political sanity as well as the general wellbeing of the country.
