Worried by the incessant cases of building collapse, the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has inaugurated a committee saddled with the responsibility to enforce compliance with regulations on building construction.

The committee, christened Project Evaluation and Monitoring Unit (PEMU), according to the Chairman of CORBON, Builder Samson A. Opaluwah, is to forestall cases of building collapse in the country.

Opaluwah, who inaugurated the zonal coordinators that would head PEMU in the six geo-political zones of the country at the council’s secretariat in Lagos, stressed that the committee would monitor building projects in a bid to protect the works of registered builders and those who were not members of CORBON.

He lamented the frequent cases of building collapse across the country, describing the trend as losses to the national economy.

Therefore, the chairman disclosed that the unit would be visiting project sites to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements in the building.

He said, “Its function shall be to visit building project sites and monitor their compliance with the established regulations on building construction and management in accordance with the National Building Code, the laws governing the practice of the professions in the built environment and the relevant planning and development of the state government.

“PEMU is a response to the management gaps in the building construction sites in the country. You are all aware of the incessant building collapse that have peaked in recent times. We have decided to take the bull by the horns and to make sure that as registered builders in Nigeria we provide the platform for stopping the unfavourable occurrences in our nation.”

He explained that the committee, which is a sub-committee under the group’s Practice Committee, would work hand in hand with other state regulatory enforcement agencies in a bid to carry out necessary actions.

He added that, “It shall submit reports of findings to relevant regulatory enforcement agencies of the states and CORBON for necessary action.”
