Lack of educational assessment affecting graduates of our institutions- IAIIEA

The President, International Association for Innovations in Educational Assessment (IAIIEA), Dr Akinyele Ariyo, has stressed the need for educational assessment in the country in order not to produce half baked graduates.

Ariyo said this yesterday in Benin during the association 5th annual conference with the theme “development -driven education assessment for transformation and survival”.

According to him, every year, the nation’s universities churn out graduates but majority lacked the capacity to deliver and perform their duty due to the emphases placed on paper certifications.

He said when the nation get it right in the area of educational assessment, everything will be alright.

“Today, You can see we are fighting against menace of examination malpractice. Many doctors and engineers are produced and they have the certificates, but they cannot perform and delivered.”

“The worry of many employers today, is that we have many graduates but when you give them work to do, they cannot do it. This has become worrisome but when we get educational assessment right, we do not give certificates to somebody who do not merit it .

“So, we will no longer be having our certificates through examination malpractice, but through merit, reading, developing your skills and attitude and then, our nation will developed”, he said.

He said IAIIEA is an academic organisation championing innovation and excellence in the education system,.

Also speaking, the Registrar, National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, noted that assessment is central to the educational system.

“The progress of overall education system could lag behind if the relevant assessment is not implemented in other aspect of education including pedagogy and curriculum.

She said she is optimistic that the outcome of the conference will go a long way in redefining the way we conduct examination and assessment activities.
