During the commissioning, the firm’s Managing Director, Mr. Seun Suleiman, said the provision of the facilities to the institution was borne out of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, to improve education in Nigeria.

He said, “One of our cardinal point is to develop education and we believe it was a big opportunity to demonstrate our Corporate Social Responsibility to the government. We committed N70million to this project as we are trying in the nearest future to train young engineers.

“Education, social and environment are the three keys words for us at Simens Energy. So in education, we cannot get it wrong, it will fix the society, take many off the street and people will be able to gain employment.”

Suleiman disclosed that the firm has ordered for softwares that would be used to teach students on PLC programming and also how to build and simulate application, saying N20 million was earmarked for purchase of the softwares.

“We have ordered new software to the tune of N20million, we have also paid for training,” he said, noting that the firm’s commitment to improving technological education in Nigeria would spread across institutions, as UNILAG was chosen to kick start the project.

“UNILAG is the center of the commerce, Lagos is a center of commerce, so we felt that the impact will be felt by starting from Lagos, being a centre of excellence. We are going to expand to other places,” he said.

UNILAG vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who led other academic staff to the commissioning, appreciated the firm for the laboratory, assuring that his students will maximize its usefulness.

“This is a big investment from Simens Energy to the University of Lagos. It would be used by our students for their start-ups, projects and starting their businesses. If you go all over the world, you will see that the students develop their skills. In this place, they will be able to develop their skills in the area of innovation, entrepreneurship and skills development in every area whether medicine, science etc.
