Experts say poor funding and human resources capacity are hampering research and implementation of results in Nigeria.

They stated this on  in Abuja during the 6th Annual Nigeria Implementation Science Alliance (NISA) conference themed ‘Sustainability of Implementation Programmes & Research’.

The experts, which comprise researchers, policymakers and implementers of public health programmes said there is a need to address the knowledge gap between policymakers and researchers to ensure effective implementation of research results in the country.

Ayodotun Oguntola, Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Clinical Care and Clinical Research, said most health research programmes in Nigeria were currently funded by international donors, with much research awaiting funding.

He said human resource for research is also a major challenge, adding that it is what is done in other countries that is being adapted to the Nigerian context.

 He said, “Apart from funding another challenge is capacity for research, there is a need for training grants that build capacity for research in Nigeria.

“NISA Board Chair, Prof. Echezona Ezeanolue said the goal of NISA is to use the information generated from the network to serve in decision-making and policy formulation for policymakers, researchers, and consumers, as well as utilising this country-specific information generated by Nigerian implementation science researchers and their collaborators to enhance the quality of care been provided.

Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation said tackling the challenge of homegrown data would improve scientific research and programme implementation in the country.
