After NWC meeting: Acrimony persists in APC over composition of campaign team

  • Tinubu has regard for LG system — Stakeholders

Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are aggrieved over the composition of the presidential campaign council.

The Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, James Faleke, released a list of members of the council on Friday night in Abuja.

But since then, there has been bickering and discontent in the party as governors, NWC members and others are dissatisfied.

The controversies have led to the indefinite postponement of the inauguration of the campaign council.

This was contained in a statement by the Director-General of the Council and Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong, on Tuesday.

The APC NWC members, who met at the party’s national secretariat yesterday in Abuja, ended their meeting without briefing newsmen.

But sources at the secretariat who spoke with our correspondent said the NWC members discussed the issue of campaign and were particularly, not satisfied with their level of inclusion in the campaign council.

A source said, “Politics is about interests. Some NWC members are aggrieved over the composition of the campaign council. They want better roles.”

Our correspondent gathered that some NWC members who are ordinary members of the campaign council were agitating for prominent positions.

Daily Trust reports that the NWC’s agitation for prominent roles is especially as the director-general, Governor Lalong, had announced there would be a rejig of the council list for inclusion of more party stakeholders.

Meanwhile, a  group, the Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, yesterday organised an inter-faith prayer session for  Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, ahead of the 2023 poll.

The prayer session, which was well-attended by pastors, imams and sheikhs, was held in Abuja.

They prayed for the victory of Tinubu/Shettima joint ticket and the APC at the polls.

In his welcome address, the Director-General, Tinubu Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, Barrister Realwan Okpanachi, said Tinubu would unite the nation if given the mandate.

Similarly, one of those who contested against Tinubu during the party’s presidential primary in Abuja, Sen Ajayi Boroffice, said, “We commit the Asiwaju project to God’s hands and we believe Asiwaju will become the president of Nigeria come 2023 and re-engineer the nation’s economy.”

Also, yesterday, stakeholders in the local government system in Nigeria have hailed Tinubu for creating a local government directorate in the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

“As stakeholders in the local government administration in the country, we applaud this gesture by the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima,” they said in a statement signed by Alhaji Aliyu Usman and Hon Bode Adetunji.

Daily Trust reports that in the list of the council released recently, the party included the local government directorate among other directorates with local government practitioners such as director, deputy director and secretary.
