The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Daniel Okoh, have appealed to Nigerians, irrespective of religious and ethnic differences, to work together to ensure peace and justice in the country.

The duo made the appeal during the 2022 3rd Quarter Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religion Council (NIREC), which was held on Monday in Lagos.

Sultan of Sokoto, the chairman of NIREC said religious leaders must be just and fair to earn the people’s trust.

He urged Muslims and Christians in Nigeria to unite to pursue peace and justice, as they are inseparable.

Also, Okoh, who is NIREC’s co-chairman, urged Nigerians to shun tribal sentiments and elect leaders with capacities.

The Executive Secretary of NIREC, Cornelius Omonokhua, said the meeting was aimed at changing existing narratives to allow justice and peace to reign in Nigeria.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, who was represented by the permanent secretary in his office, Dr Maurice Nnamdi Mbaeri, said Nigerians must create the needed change to live in unity and harmony.

Speaking on the theme of the meeting, “Working together for justice and peace,” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State said that promoting unity, peace, justice and tranquility in Nigeria would bring about a peaceful coexistence among the people.

Commenting on the ongoing seven-month-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sanwo-Olu and Sultan appealed to the union to call off the strike and get the students back to school.

They urged ASUU and the federal government to as a matter of urgency find a common ground to resolve the lingering issues.
