PSC mgt to meet IGP, minister over police recruitment, promotion

The management of the Police Service Commission has concluded all arrangements to interface with the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba over its ongoing recruitment process of Police Constables into the force.

It was learnt that the new management being led by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Clara Ogunbiyi, will also meet with the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, to resolve a wide range of issues affecting the commission and the police force.

Daily Trust reports that the development is coming less than a week the erstwhile chairman of the Commission, Musiliu Smith, a former Inspector-General of Police was forced to relinquish his position over a wide range of issues.

According to a commissioner of PSC, apart from the ongoing recruitment exercise, the meeting will centre on the disciplinary actions against erring officers, some officers’ complaints about promotion in the force, and the commission’s staff welfare, among others.

The official did not state categorically when the meeting would hold but said it would take place before the week runs out, adding that the management is trying to hasten up in resolving all the issues raised by the workers’ union to avoid another round of strike.

The spokesman of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani, who confirmed the development, noted that the acting chairman of the PSC, Justice Ogunbiyi also addressed the staff of the commission on Monday about the development.

Ani said, ”The acting Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, today Monday, September 19th, 2022 addressed the Staff of the Commission on the mandate of the Commission as provided for in paragraphs 29 and 30 of the 3rd Schedule of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 6(1) of the Police Service Commission Establishment (Act) 2001.

”Justice Ogunbiyi informed the Staff that the Management will engage in personal interface with the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the Minister of Police Affairs to understand the common ground of each other’s responsibility.

”She further said that the Management intends to operate an all-inclusive and open door policy as provided by the provision of the relevant laws.

”Justice Ogunbiyi, therefore, called on Staff of the Commission to inculcate mutual respect, good conduct and character among themselves and towards the Management stressing that “respect begets respect and the Management will do its utmost best to take the service delivery in the Commission to an enviable and excellent pedestal”.

”She solicited for the cooperation of all the Staff to achieve the mandate of the Commission as an effective Civilian oversight of the entire Police Force.”
