At least nine people have been confirmed dead after drowning in different local government areas of Jigawa State over the weekend.
The police spokesman in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, and his Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) counterpart, CSC Adamu Shehu, disclosed this to newsmen in Dutse.

Two female friends, Nazira and Hairana, both 20 years of age from Ala Turubu village in Kiyawa LGA drowned in a stream on Saturday at about 6pm while trying to cross.
Also, a 15-year-old boy identified as Abubakar Madu at Birkita Wake village in Birniwa LGA drowned in the Gargazawa stream.
In another incident, two persons, Magaji Sani (25), of Sabon Garin Takenebo village, and Anas Sale (20), of Hawandu village, drowned in streams at Laura and Kiri villages in Gagarawa LGAs respectively.
Also, on Saturday, one 29-year-old Umar Sale of Majia town in Taura LGA got trapped in a sand ditch and died on the spot.
Similarly, two sisters, Jamila Rabi’u (14) and Rabi Rabi’u (12) of Idan Zakara village, Dabuwaran Ward in Kaugama LGA got drowned on their way from the farm.
Daily Trust further reports that cases boat mishaps and passengers drowning have been on the rise in the state in the last couple of weeks, with as many as 20 people already confirmed dead, apart from the nine new casualties.
