2023: Media must act as watchdog of democracy – NILDS DG

The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof Abubakar O. Sulaiman, has charged the media to act as watchdog of Nigeria’s democracy through responsible and professional reportage as the 2023 general elections draw closer.

He made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during a capacity-building workshop organised for members of the House of Representatives and Senate Press Corps by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies in collaboration with the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung.

He said at a time of “significant polarisation, insecurity and fear,” journalists owe it a duty to report responsibly rather than further aggravate the situation.

He said the focus of media reportage at this critical point in the nation’s democratic journey should shift from mere sensational and divisive storytelling to one that emphasises collaborative problem-solving and empowers citizens to make the right decisions.
