Lawyer jailed 5 years for trafficking hemp

A 26-year-old lawyer, Sulaimon Kaosarat Yetunde, was on Tuesday convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment by a Lagos Federal High Court for trafficking Indian hemp.

Yetunde, who read law in one of Benin Republic’s universities, was jailed by Justice Daniel Osiagor after she pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and unlawful export of 1.10kg of Indian hemp.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Abu Ibrahim, told the court that the accused was arrested on July 18, 2022, at the Export Shed of the National Handling Company Limited (NAHCO) of thé Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja-Lagos, when she attempted exporting the banned weed.

Following her plea of guilty, the prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence her.

But counsel to the convict, Mr Benson Ndakara, pleaded with the court to be lenient with his client and to put into consideration that she was a first time offender.

Justice Osiagor sentenced her to five years imprisonment.

The judge, however, ordered the convict to pay the N100,000 fine in lieu of the jail term.
