ASUU Strike: Gombe varsity asks lecturers on study leave to resume

Gombe State University (GSU) management on Monday asked all academic staff members currently on study leave to resume duty with immediate effect.

Registrar of the university, Dr Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto, in a memo dated September 5, 2022, directed all lecturers studying within Nigeria to return to their duty post, pending resumption of academic activities in their respective universities of studies.

The memo read, “Following the resumption of full academic activities in the GUS to complete the 2021/2022 academic session, and in view of the ongoing national industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which halted academic activities in pubic universities; I write on behalf of the management to request all teaching staff that are on study fellowship within Nigeria, to report back to the university with immediate effect in order to resume duty.

“This is pending the resumption of academic activities in the universities of their studies. The affected staffs are strongly advised to ensure strict compliance.”

Daily Trust reports that the GSU management had last Thursday directed all academic staff of the institution to resume work with immediate effect.

The university provided attendance registers for lecturers willing to resume for classes and stated that it would evoke the doctrine of ‘no-work, no-pay,’ against all staff members who failed to resume before Friday, September 9, 2022.

Also, it matriculated the newly admitted students last Saturday.

However, Chairman of GSU chapter of ASUU, Dr Suleiman Salihu Jauro, said the union had rejected the directive of the university management to resume work.

He said the union would not suspend the strike because the national executive council of the union is yet to vacate the indefinite strike action, adding that the GSU also failed to address some of the outstanding local issues with its members.
