2 vigilantes remanded over death of spaghetti theft suspect

A magistrates’ court in Minna, Niger State, has ordered the remand of two vigilantes, Abdullahi Aliyu and Salisu Shu’aibu, of Suleja town over criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

The prosecutor, Inspector Bello Mohammed, told the court that on August 12, one Isyaku Salisu of Burku, Gurara LGA, reported to the police that on August 10, the accused who were on guard at the Suleiman Jibrin Plaza, Suleja, conspired with Babangida Yakubu, Hamza Zango and others (at large) and arrested one Awwal Isyaku over suspicion of theft of three bags of spaghetti and took him to their office.

Inspector Bello explained that Isyaku was tortured with a horse whip and later died at the Suleja General Hospital.

He said upon receipt of the complaint, police detectives swung into action and arrested Abdullahi Aliyu and Salisu Shu’aibu in connection with the crime.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Hauwa Kulu Isah, ordered their remand in the Minna Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to September 19.
