Speaking at the event, the Zakat Committee Chairman, Abdulrazak Dhulqarnian, said the gesture was aimed at easing the suffering of the beneficiaries.
While stressing that the payment of Zakat is compulsory for Muslims who have the means to do so, the chairman added that part of the benefits attached to giving Zakat included the purification of wealth as stated by Allah in the Qur’an.
“In the last five years, more than 200 people have benefited from such a gesture with about N20 million received and disbursed by the committee. This year, due to the economic hardship being faced in the country, not many people were able to give their Zakat so we were only able to raise N3.7m, unlike last year where over N4.5m was raised.”
He explained that the selection of beneficiaries was based on need, adding that the gesture was extended to non-members of NASFAT.
The Kaduna State Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, called on other organisations to emulate NASFAT in its support of the less privileged in society, especially women and children.
The branch chairman, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Ajao, said the executive had approved the opening of a special bank account tagged, “Widows and Orphans Endowment Fund,” to take care of the needy widows and orphans.
