Ebonyi State governor and chairman of South East Governors’ Forum, David Umahi, has said that university education is not for everybody.
Advocating a review of the Nigerian educational system, Umahi said it was unreasonable for the federal government to borrow over N1 trillion to meet the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) demands.

The governor spoke in his office while reacting to the lingering ASUU strike.
Umahi stressed the need for basic and vocational education and noted that higher education was not compulsory in any given nation.
He said, “University education is not for everybody and that is the truth. The basic education every country strives to attain is secondary school and vocational schools.
“These are the basic schools and when you have these qualifications, you will be able to use it either to start up something or to be able to use it to be employed and while you are in employed, you can aspire to university education.
“So there is a need to review our educational system; it mustn’t be for everybody.”
Umahi added that ASUU demands were genuine but could only be met gradually and not as a whole.
