‘Kanuri now second largest tribe in Kano’

The head of Kanuri community in Kano state, the Mai Kanuribe, Mai Mustapha Lawan, has said that there are over two million Kanuris in the state, making them the second largest tribe after the indigenous Hausa.

He made this known in Kano during the turbaning ceremony of some Kanuri traditional title holders from the 44 local government areas of the state.

Mai Kanuribe also said the newly appointed title holders will serve as his ambassadors who will be reporting to him, just as he reports directly to Shehu of Borno.

He explained that, “Our people are so much here in Kano state, numbering close to two million, making us the second largest tribe in the state after Hausa.

“These newly appointed holders will now form a well organised structure. Before this, we don’t have structure. Our plan is to make sure that subsequently, whosoever is coming from our communities should have our consent.

“Today, I have appointed more than 40 title holders spread across the state,” he explained.

He however called on them to carry everyone along and work towards bringing development to the state.

Mai Lawan also tasked them to work towards unifying their respective communities and assist one another by addressing issues affecting all the Kanuris around them.

Daily Trust reports that Mai Lawan was conferred with Mai Kanuribe of Kano title by the Shehu of Borno in 2021, to serve as his ambassador in the state.
