The Daily Trust reports that there was a heavy downpour in Kano last week which led to flooding and building collapses.

The deceased, Mustapha Salisu, along with other victims, was taken to hospital by the school management where he was confirmed dead.

His mother, Binta Salisu, said she received the shocking news of her son’s death hours after he bade her farewell when he was going to school.

“He told me he was going to school, but a few hours later we received the news that a building had collapsed on him,” she said in tears.

A witness, Ibrahim Sarki, who assisted in evacuating the victims, said they had been raising concerns over the bad condition of the building but they were not attended to.

Efforts to reach the Kano State Secondary School Management Board (KSSMB) for comment on the matter were not successful as the number of the public relations officer, Ibrahim Baba, couldn’t be reached at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the State Fire Service, through its spokesman, SFS Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said they only saw the incident in the news, but did not receive a distress call over it.
