A network of 186 civil society organisations against human trafficking and child labour has identified poverty and lack of education as major factors mitigating the eradication of human trafficking in Nigeria.
The network, under the umbrella of Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), which made this known through its FCT Coordinator, Carol Shalom, during a road show to celebrate the World Day Against Human Trafficking in Abuja, said the eradication of poverty is key in addressing human trafficking.

During the roadshow which ended at the headquarters of the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP), the group sensitised residents on the ills of human trafficking.
The FCT coordinator of NACTAL said poverty and lack of education are contributory factors to the menace of human trafficking.
“An uneducated man would want his child to go and stay with his uncle who is educated with the mindset that uncle will educate the child but that uncle ends up trafficking the child,” she said.
While receiving the group at the NAPTIP’s headquarters, the organisation’s director, Legal and Prosecution, Hassan Tahir, commended the group for their efforts, adding that human trafficking is a crime that the country and all hands must be on deck to reduce to the barest minimum if not eradicated.
