Team Nigeria’s hope of winning at least a medal in Men’s 100m event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham was dashed on Wednesday as the trio of Godson Oghenebrume, Favour Ashe and Raymond Ekevwo failed to qualify for the finals.
Both Favour Ashe and Raymond Ekewo had won their respective heats with encouraging performances but Oghenebrume had to wait with his time of 10.36s to get passing as one of the non-automatic qualifiers.

Sadly, when the chips were down, the youngsters failed to rise to the occasion.
However, there was a reprieve for Team Nigeria as Patience George qualified for the semifinals of the women’s 400m event.
She ran 52.63s to finish 4th in her heat but it was good enough to give her a semi-final place as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.
But her compatriots, Patience Knowledge Omovoh and youngster Ella Onojuwvwo failed to make it.
Team Nigeria’s duo of Grace Nkwocha and Rosemary Chukwuma also reached the final of the 100m women’s event as they finished second in their respective heats.
However, Joy Udo-Gabriel failed to reach the finals.
In table tennis, Esther Aribamise progressed into the main draw after winning her 2 preliminary games.
Meanwhile, Sule Nasiru defeated Canadian Muhammad Mudassar after a brilliant 3-0 win as he emerged victorious in his first match of the Table Tennis Men’s event in the Para category.
And in boxing, Adeyinka Benson lost in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Middleweight Boxing in the 71-75kg to Scotland’s Sam Hickey.
As at the time of press Team Nigeria was 10th on the medals table with three gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
