NGO disburses N70 million to 2,050 women in North East

A Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Coalition for the Eradication of Poverty (CISCOPE)  in partnership with OXFAM has disbursed N70 million  to 2,050 house holds in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states..

Peter Egwudah, the Programme manager of CISCOPE who spoke  on Friday in Michika, during the monetary distribution, lamented the neglect of millions of internally displaced persons living outside government designated camps, saying greater majority of insurgency victims have returned to their communities.

CISCOPE in partnership with OXFAM is implementing the monetary support to victims of the insurgency on behalf of  the UNDP.

He called on the international humanitarian organization currently working in the North East to extend their services to other states in the region, instead of over concentrating their activities in Borno State.

“We have over 126 International Non-Governmental Organization’s who are in Maiduguri who are doing nothing.Because what they read on papers and what they see on headline news in their countries is that there are over 2 million IDP’s in Nigeria who need water and food and they come with that in mind. But when they come they all go to Borno and get stuck there," he stated.

Egwuda therefore called on  government and donor agencies to assist returnees to sustain their lives in their recaptured homes through provision of agricultural inputs as well as basic  infrastructure.

”There’s over a million people living in internally displaced persons camp in Maiduguri but this cannot be compared to the number of those that have returned back to liberated communities.

"Using this place (Michika) as an example, the roads are bad, trucks don’t come here easily. So if the roads are fixed, water and electricity are also restored and the people who need seeds and livelihood package are supported. Then there would be easy flow of commercial activities in the region and this will also boost the economy; which will also touch everybody," he added.
