Strike: No going back on nationwide protest – Varsity workers

The Joint Action Committee of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions (NASU) on Sunday insisted on tomorrow’s nationwide protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the Federal Government’s failure to resolve issues that led to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The spokesman of JAC and National Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, said at a press conference in Abuja over the weekend.

‘’Yes, the two weeks reportedly given by the president within which to address the industrial issues is a directive from the government to the Minister of Education as we were told.

‘’But there is no official paper before us to see that truly the Minister of Education was directed to resolve the issue. We only read from the good work media has done,’’ Adeyemi said.

JAC also expressed dissatisfaction with the Prof. Nimi-Briggs-led committee’s report submitted to the government for approval.

The committee was set up in March by the government to oversee the negotiations with the four university-based unions.

But the unions alleged that the committee’s negotiations processes were biased as their members were not duly involved and did not endorse the 10 percent salary increase purportedly recommended in the report.
