Super Falcons boycott training over unpaid allowances

For the umpteenth time, the Super Falcons boycotted a scheduled training session Wednesday morning over unpaid allowances at the ongoing Africa Women’s Nations Cup (AWCON) in Morocco.

Daily Trust gathered from a credible source in Morocco that even as they were again scheduled to have an evening training session after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reportedly promised to pay the allowance, the Falcons refused to train until their demands were met.

The Super Falcons had arrived Casablanca from Rabat after their 5-4 loss to Morocco and had a recovery session in the swimming pool before the decision to boycott training.

The players reportedly have not been paid since the 2022 AWCON qualifiers.

This is Super Falcons’ second protest in three years as it would be recalled that the team protested in France after losing to Germany during the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

The African champions began a protest against the NFF, demanding that unpaid bonuses from 2016 be settled before they leave their hotel in France.

Eighteen years ago, the team remained in their hotel in South Africa for three days after the NFF failed to pay their bonuses for winning the 2004 African Women’s Championship.

Meanwhile, prior to this latest incident, the NFF had accused the sports ministry of not releasing funds for the team for the tournament but the ministry fired back saying the NFF had submitted its budget late.

Speaking during a recent media parley, the sports minister, Sunday Dare said the federal government approved the funds within two weeks but admitted the money might not cover all outstanding allowances.
