Gunmen kill 2, injure 1 in Kogi

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen were reported to have stormed the village of Akpanya in Igala Mela -Odolu Local Government in Kogi State and killed two people, injuring one in the process.

An eyewitness said the incident happened on  Sunday afternoon at the boundary town between Enugu and Kogi states, stressing that one of the victims died on the spot while another died on the way to the hospital even as the third victim is said to be on the danger list.

Locals from the region said that the incident took place at Agbedo – Akpanya at the village market square, saying that it could be a robbery case as those that were killed were said to have put up resistance that infuriated the gunmen to shoot them and disposes them of their valuables.

Another source said the gunmen were on a trail of some hoodlums believed to be hiding in the village over a crime said to have been committed in Enugu state recently.

The locals told Daily Trust that the gunmen believed to be from Enugu State, numbering about six stormed the village on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons and flagged down a young man on a motorbike and shot him dead.

“The hoodlums snatched two motorcycles, entered a shop and picked two bags of semovita and some food items, and disappeared through the same Unadu route back to Enugu state”, said Gabriel, an eyewitness from the village.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, said the command had not been officially informed of the incident, promising to get in touch with the police formation of the area for details.
