Nigerian striker, Abubakar Lawal, wins Rwanda FA Cup with AS Kigali

A former Nigerian junior international, Abubakar Lawal, has won this year’s Rwanda Peace Cup (FA Cup) with AS Kigali after a slim 1-0 win over Rwanda Premier League champions, APR FC on Tuesday night at the Stade de Kigali.

Kalisa Rachid scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute for AS Kigali’s fourth FA Cup title.

AS Kigali who have qualified to represent Rwanda in the 2022/2023 CAF Confederations Cup were champions in 2001, 2013, 2019 and now 2022.

In his reaction, the former Flying Eagles star striker said the victory didn’t come to AS Kigali on a platter of gold.

He said their more illustrious opponents gave them a run for their money as they wanted to win both the league and the Peace Cup.

“It was not an easy match but we gave our all because we were condemned to win to qualify for next year’s Confederations Cup.

“So, I can say we were motivated by the opportunity before us to return to the continent. I thank almighty Allah that our efforts didn’t end in vain.

“We are excited about the win but we won’t over celebrate because we have to start planning how to succeed in the Confederations Cup,” he said.

The former Pillars, Nasarawa United and Wikki Tourists fleet-footed striker scored eight goals and provided 10 assists for AS Kigali in the league.

Meanwhile, it was a double celebration for the AS Kigali city sponsored team as their ladies had earlier beaten Kamonyi WFC 4-0 in Women’s Peace Cup finals.

A brace each by Mukeshimana Dorothe and Usanase Zawadi earned the AS Kigali women’s team a second title after the first in 2019.
