Kano residents lament demolition of classrooms for shops

Residents in Kano have lamented over an ongoing encroachment of Government Secondary School, Kofar Nasarawa, popularly known as GSS K/Nasarawa which has reportedly seen some classrooms demolished to give room for business premises.

Residents and civil society organisations in the city have been lamenting the indiscriminate allocation of lands belonging to hospitals, mosques, football fields, and other landmark property for the construction of commercial buildings.

Reports gathered that land housing some classes and the back fence of the school, which are situated close to Sani Abacha Stadium, have been sold to individuals to build shops.

The back fence of the school passes through the popular IBB Road close to Kwari Market, hence regarded as the reason for selling the place.

When Daily Trust visited the school yesterday, it was found that the foundation for the shops had already been laid and that a bulldozer had demolished some parts of the old classes.

 A business owner close to the school told our reporter that some classes were also demolished aside from the back fence.

“We just saw a bulldozer demolishing the building and some other parts were cleared and a foundation is already laid. Honestly, we never thought it would come to this level,” he said.

Daily Trust gathered that the school is one of the ancient schools in the city and residents feared how its history was about to diminish over the incessant encroachment of structures in the state.

 “This is an old school. All of us grew up here and saw the school. But today they want to cripple its progress,” said another resident, Jamilu Saad.

While there were insinuations that the government had rescinded the allocation of the land for the construction of shops, claiming the allocation was a mistake, Daily Trust could not get any official of the government to independently verify that as of the time of filing this report.
