Ekiti poll: Police officers collected allowances from a party – Segun Oni’s aide

Ben Oguntuase, the chairman of the strategic committee of Segun Oni’s campaign organisation, has accused the police of collecting money from a certain political party during the governorship election in the state on Saturday.

All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, who is the immediate past Secretary to the State Government, won in 15 out of the 16 local government areas of the state. He polled 187,057 votes.

Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) scored 82,211 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party’s Bisi Kolawole scored 67,457 votes.

Oguntuase made the accusation while speaking on the Channels Tv’s Sunrise Daily on Monday.

He said, “Why do we need to deploy such a large contingent of policemen and other security agencies if they can not stop violence when it’s occurring in their presence?

“Vote-buying is a criminal offence. When they see that, we even called them, but they were very lackadaisical in their attitude and they never really cared. So what was the need for their presence?

“How much money did all the police officers that came for the election collect?

“We know how much a police officer was given as his allowance for coming to this election.

“Why did the police officers and others receive money from the party when they were coming for official duties? That is the start of corruption.”

When asked if he has any evidence to support his claims, he said his party would provide that in court.

While also accusing the ruling party in the state of vote-buying, he said there were videos all over the social media where people were sharing money.

Police keep mum

All efforts to get a reaction from the authorities of the Nigerian police proved abortive.

When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said he was in a noisy place and promised to call back.

Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, still promised to call back when contacted again after several hours.

He had yet to reply to a text message sent to him seeking clarification on the SDP’s allegations against the police officers.
