Operatives of the Economic ad Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a party agent over alleged vote buying at the ongoing Ekiti gubernatorial election.
Daily Trust understands that the EFCC officials arrested the party agent at a polling unit in Ola Oluwa Grammar School.
An election observer from the Center for Democracy and Development confirmed the incident to Daily Trust saying, “The operatives arrested a man at the same polling unit due to possession of a large sum of money, suspected to be intended to buy votes.
“It was also suspected that he had some form of political affiliation, but the political party he was supporting was not confirmed.”
Vote buying has been part of Nigeria’s electoral system where major political parties take advantage of the economic vvulnerability of voters to induce them financially.
The major political parties in the Ekiti race are the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party.
The incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi belongs to the APC and his backing the candidate of the party, Biodun Oyebanji to succeed him.
