Nigerians tasked on using movies to encourage positive behaviours

An official of the Advocacy for Positive Behavioural Patterns and Initiative, Mrs StellaMarris Isikwe, has urged Nigerians to optimise the potential of movies in encouraging positive behaviours among children and teenagers.

Isikwe, who made this known at the Movie Day event organised by the advocacy group for children and teenagers in Abuja, said movies could play a crucial role in ensuring that these sets of people grow up to become functional members of society.

“Movies have a lot of roles to play in the lives of these young ones because what you see affects how you behave and it is actually these movies that have been used to corrupt their minds in the first place.

“So, we can also use the same movies to correct their minds. Movies are powerful tools. It will attract their attention so that we can now preach to them via the same movie,” she said.

She said movies should be used to project positive behaviours in the lives of the children and teens thereby bringing out the good in them.

On the expected positive behaviours, the young ones are expected to imbibe from the movies they saw, she said, “Aside from their manners of actions, think of how they see things. We have one movie on drugs; the effects of drugs on children and how it affects them.”

One of the teenagers at the event, Sanusi Muktar, commended the organisers, adding that from the movie he saw – Akeelah and the Bee – he learnt that students can succeed regardless of the challenges they faced, “it is your mindset that matters and the determination, no matter how hard it is, just have a strong will power and believe it is achievable.”

He said movies are good ways of creating positive behaviour in teenagers because children and teenagers learn fast from what they see, “they emulate things easily especially when they see those things from their environment.

“So, making use of movies to inculcate certain values in them will be the right choice in the sense that when they watch these movies, they will learn some things to put in their lives to become worthy people in the future.”
