Gunmen abduct ex-Bayelsa Commissioner

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted the former Commissioner for Special Duties in Bayelsa State, Engr. Mike Ogiasa, at his hometown in Otuabadi, Ogbia Local Government Area.

Engr. Ogiasa, who is a relative of former President Goodluck Jonathan and a convener of the socio-political group known as Voice of the South-South, which has been at the forefront of the purported move to draft Dr Goodluck Jonathan into the 2023 presidential race, was abducted on Wednesday evening, according to community sources.

He was also a special adviser on power development during the administration of former Governor Seriake Dickson.

It was gathered that Engr. Ogiasa was abducted by gunmen numbering eight, who arrived at his village residence after he returned home from a meeting.

According to the community sources, Engr. Ogiasa had planned to return to Yenagoa at the end of the meeting, “but some persons prevailed on him to wait till next morning; he was indoor when the gunmen arrived and abducted him.”

Family sources informed Daily Trust on Sunday that the abductors are yet to contact the family of the abducted politician to say their purpose for abduction.

When contacted, the police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the abduction of the politician, saying police are investigating the incident to rescue him.

A few days ago, Igbo traders doing business in Bayelsa State raised alarm over the incessant kidnapping of their members, saying the situation had already driven most of the businessmen out of the state.
