Surety arraigned as accused jumps bail

A businessman, Jerome Daniel, has been arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Wuse, Zone 6, Abuja, for failure to produce an accused person he stood surety for.

The prosecutor, ASP Peter Ejike, told the court that the defendant on May 9, 2022, went to the Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB), Abuja, and applied for the bail of one Mr Umar Sahabi who was being investigated for conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach and intimidation.

He said upon application for the bail of the suspect, the bureau graciously granted, and the defendant agreed to stand as a surety for the suspect and to produce him anytime he was needed at the FIB.

ASP Ejike, however, said on several occasions the defendant was asked to provide the suspect he couldn’t and failed to account for the whereabouts of Umar Sahabi.

When the charges were read to him, the defendant, through his lawyer, FOC Uzeogwu, sought bail citing that the offence was bailable under Section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Act (ACJA) 2015.

The Magistrate, Fatima Ahmad Ibrahim, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5m and two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to May 25.
