‘I’ve been on Master’s since 2020’, students lament effect of ASUU strike

As the two-month warning strike of the Association of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ends on Monday, 9th May, the Union is set to commence an indefinite strike.

The decision is part of the deliberations at the ongoing meeting of ASUU executives in Abuja.

Students at government-owned universities have been out of classrooms since February 14, 2022.

Other unions such as Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have also declared strike, shutting down the university system completely.

The unions said the strike action was to compel the government to implement various agreements reached with them, but both parties failed to reach a truce after several negotiations.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on Twitter have expressed anger over the plan.

@AtandaIfe said, “Please na. We are begging. Just pity the vulnerable. The children of these lots are studying in private schools and some outside the country. The children of the poor are the ones feeling the pains and whose lives are on hold… When two elephants fight, it’s the grass under….”

@Sanibanasko said since he enrolled for his Masters in 2020, he is still not through as a result of the lingering strike.

“I do not understand this strike. I applied for my Master’s degree in 2020 and I have not graduated yet,” he tweeted.

@IsiaqJamiu10 wrote, “Heyyyy Close to 4month is warning strike Haaaa So, you just want to start the indefinite now and I know ASUU, their strike can’t less than a year Hmmmmm……MAY GOD HELP OUR COUNTRY.”
