NGO backs psychiatric evaluation for politicians

A non-governmental organization which advocates mental health, Purple Life Connections, has backed the recent call by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for politicians to undergo psychiatric evaluation and drug test before the 2023 general elections.

Speaking yesterday at a press conference, founder of the organization, Mima Odiegwu said “It is important for people who will be saddled with the responsibility of handling national resources to undergo certain level of test to ascertain their mental soundness before assuming office.

She said there is also a need for advocacy both at national and subnational levels for people to speak out anytime they are abused or assaulted.

“Domestic violence doesn’t affect women alone as men are also victims. However, stories about men being abused are hardly reported, which is why our series ‘Lifelines with Mima’ counsels and advocate for victims of abuse so that their voices can be heard,” she said.

She further called on the government to partner with non-governmental organizations in intensifying campaign against domestic violence and mental health challenges.
