Centre unveils ‘The Face’ in Abuja

The founder of the International Institute for Creative Development (IICD), Nduwhite Ndubuisi Ahanonu, has urged Nigerians to take conscious efforts against defacing the earth.

Ahanonu made the call during the presentation of ‘The Face’, a collaborative metal sculpture from Upcycling Redefined Workshop 2021 to the management of Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja as part of activities to celebrate World Earth Day.

He said the sculpture was made from junk.

He described the human face as a unit of a whole, adding that “That is why we take a portrait to identify a person. Nobody wants their face to be defaced. Everybody wants to have an amazing face. For every form of identity, it is the face that is recognised.”

He condemned indiscriminate disposal of wastes which he said defaces the earth, “Imagine our face overridden by those wastes, what will you look like? How are you going to feel? This is to draw a consciousness that reverses the table. How will you feel in case the junks overtake your face?” he asked.

He said the metal sculpture was made by 15 talented artists during a three-week Upcycling Redefined Workshop sponsored by the United States Embassy in Nigeria in 2021.

One of the artists, Stanley Anigbogu, commended the sculpture, adding that the fusion of technology in it added to its uniqueness as the workshop had opened doors for him, especially in exploring the fusion of art and technology.

The MD/CEO of Transcorp Hotels PLC, Dupe Olusola, commended the artists and the institute for the sculpture while she commended the involvement of women in the project.

“There are so many talents in Nigeria. Having it showcases here is nice. I am looking forward to the engagement around it,” she said, adding that the sculpture will help in the organisation’s drive to develop leisure and tourism in Nigeria.

The sculpture presentation was attended by the representatives of the US Government and other dignitaries.
