Civil servants to celebrate Sallah without salary

Civil servants in Taraba State have expressed disappointment over the failure of the state government to pay their salaries ahead of the Eid-El Fitr celebration.

A civil servant, Musa Jamilu, said, “In December, salaries were either paid on 18th or 20th, but today, a day to Sallah and it is 30th of April, nobody knows when the salaries will be paid.”

Another civil servant who would not like his name mentioned said many civil servants in the state were disappointed with the state government over its failure to pay salary during this period of Sallah festivities.

He said unlike what happens every December, when salaries are paid in good time, the same gesture was not extended during the Sallah period when workers need their salaries to buy items for their families.

He said many civil servants may not be able to provide for the needs of their families for Sallah festivities without their salaries.

Another civil servant, Yakubu Inuwa, said it was the banks that helped workers out during this period by giving them salary advances.

He said most commercial banks offer salary advances to civil servants who bank with them.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Darius Ishāku, Mr. Bala DanAbu, said he was not aware that salaries were not paid.

“My principal takes the issue of salary payment of civil servants seriously; he always pays the civil servants their salaries promptly,” he said.
