Bauchi imposes curfew on 2 communities

Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Gudum Hausawa and Gudum Fulani communities of Bauchi Local Government Area following a communal crisis that left three people dead and 20 houses burnt.

The governor gave the directive when he led heads of security agencies and top government officials on an assessment visit to the affected communities.

He said already security agencies had arrested the perpetrators, promising to provide lasting peace and security, not only in the area, but across all the communities in the state.

The governor directed security agencies to conduct intensive surveillance in order to identify the cause of the incident and condemned the burning of houses and other properties in the mayhem.

“I have come here to commiserate with my brothers and sisters over the ugly incident that happened in this area and some of the perpetrators were arrested and we are in the process of prosecuting them.

“We are going to support those whose houses were burnt and the families of those who lost their lives with palliatives to cushion the effect of the incident,” he said.

The governor, who also directed the establishment of a police outfit in the area to enforce security, urged residents to live in peace and harmony irrespective of their religious or tribal differences.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Umar Sanda, promised that the security agencies would work on the directives for the total restoration of peace in the Gudum Hausawa community.

It would be recalled that hoodlums had on Monday attacked a wedding sendoff ceremony held by a retired police officer, Ezra Yari, in honour of his daughter in the area.

The police had said the thugs hijacked the occasion, entered the bride’s father’s house and used weapons like machetes and knives to injure some youths while two teenagers, Gift Felix (17) and Shalon Memdir (18), were confirmed dead at the Bauchi Specialist Hospital.
