Plan to set Abuja market, palace on fire averted

There was tension in Karmo, an Abuja suburb, following an allegation of a plan to set fire to the community’s market in the early hours of Tuesday.

City & Crime reports that the market, one of the popular local markets in the FCT, had earlier recorded two fire incidents.

A trader in the market, Sani Aliyu, said the Tuesday fire in a shop was noticed around 1am, and was put out by a combined effort of the vigilantes and some traders.

He said petrol that was poured on nearby shops, as well as some objects relating to cultism, within the facility, were discovered.

It was gathered that ahead of the incident, there was a confrontation between the victims of the last fire incident and leaders of the indigenous community who stopped traders from putting back their shops.

“Counting on that, some youths attempted to invade the palace of the community on Tuesday morning with the intention of setting it on fire, but fortunately, our leaders succeeded in halting them.’’

Effort to speak to the FCT police command’s spokesperson about the development was not successful.
