FCT fish farmers urged to embrace new species

Fish farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to expand their activities to accommodate other fish species for greater patronage and more income generation.

The secretary, agriculture and rural development in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Malam Abubakar Ibrahim, made the call Saturday at the flag-off of a workshop organised to sensitise fish farmers in the FCT on the need to diversify fish production to embrace new fish species other than the popular catfish.

Malam Ibrahim said available records showed that catfish production accounted for about 80 per cent of all farmed fish in Nigeria, thereby making Nigeria the largest producer of catfish in sub-Sahara Africa.
