Gunshots as warring transporters clash in Lagos

There was tension in Abule-Egba community along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway in Lagos Friday when thugs invaded the community in two vehicles and started shooting into the air.

The invasion, it was learnt, was part of the ongoing clashes by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) loyal to the suspended Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya and that of the Tricycle Owners and Operators’ Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) chaired by Abiola Azeez known as Istijabah.

Our correspondent learnt that suspected thugs stormed the area around Ekoro Junction Abule-Egba by 7:30am while shooting into the air.

In the process, a roadside trader was shot and the bullet allegedly pierced through one of his arms. He was rushed to a nearby hospital while his condition was unknown as at the time of filing this report.

An eyewitness, who is a resident of the area said, “The people came and started shooting into the air and in the process, they shot one man and the bullet broke his arm.

The resident who simply identified himself as Peter said residents are living in fears over the continued threat from the warring transporters.

Daily Trust Saturday gathered that heavy security detachment had been mobilised to the area.

The Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, however urged Lagosians to go about the normal businesses, saying the areas are “absolutely calm.”
