Rivers United left it late to pick the maximum points on Wednesday as they defeated Katsina United 1-0 in the Match Day 22 fixture played at the Muhammadu Dikko stadium Katsina.

The table toppers who are unbeaten in their last five games got the match winner in the 90th minute.

Katsina United who are faced with relegation started the contest strongly by putting pressure on their opponents for an early goal.

However, the first real chance of the game fell to the visitors in the 23rd minute when Onoja Joseph and Chijoke Akuneto combined but were unable to beat Katsina goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.

Rivers United pressurised their hosts but the first half ended in a barren draw.

On resumption, the visitors thought they had scored in the 49th minute but the referee ruled out Ishaq Rafiu’s goal for offside.

Due to time wasting, additional nine minutes were added and this played out well in favour of the visitors as Joseph Onoja scored a brilliant individual goal to give his side the three points in the 96th minute.

With yesterday’s victory, Rivers United have opened a four-goal gap on their closest rivals Plateau United who are second with 45 points.

Meanwhile, Katsina United left languishing in 19th position with 21 points from 22 matches.
